Android TV is a version of the Android operating system designed by Google for digital media players, set-top boxes, soundboards, and televisions. Android TV is a replacement for Google TV and features a user interface designed around content discovery and voice search and integration with other Google technologies like Assistant, Cast, and Knowledge Graph.
Android TV was announced in June 2014 as the successor of Google TV, which was commercially unsuccessful. Android TV was more in-line with other digital media player platforms for the time but featured Google’s Knowledge Graph project, Chromecast compatibility, an emphasis on search, and more connections to the Android ecosystem. Android TV also focused on supporting video games with support for Bluetooth gamepads and the Google Play Games framework. The ADT-1, Android TV’s development kit, was based on a scrapped “Nexus TV” launch device that was in development by Google.
