The study by Bundy, published in 1962, was a landmark in the history of Pindar's Victory Odes research.
The understanding shared within Greek classical culture can only be restored through empirical verification using similar examples. Bundy expressed this situation as "Pindar research is genre research." His aim was to focus on the purpose of praising the victor and to draw attention to the study of topoi based on genre understanding. He denied the view that saw difficult passages as biographical or the outpouring of the author's opinions, and appealed for the necessity of a comprehensive rereading to re-interpret the Victory Odes within the context of the genre. However, in reality, genre research is only the foundation, and his problem statement is being forgotten, as if it has already been overcome.
In response to this research situation, the author clarifies through precise analysis of individual examples that the Victory Odes are aggregated to the purpose of praising the victor through rhetoric and argumentation that praise the victor, and that it is necessary to confirm its development throughout the entire song.
Pindar has been said to be difficult, but if you cannot decipher Pindar, you cannot read any other classical author. Pindar research is a touchstone for us, challenging the possibility of reading Greek literature as a whole.
The aim of this book is to reveal, through a thorough reading of the text, the current state of understanding Pindar, that is, the fact that Greek is not being read, and that the path to decipherment is still ongoing, and to encourage researchers to join this journey.
